    Drip irrigation has been the best thing I’ve done for my garden. It saves so much time. It wasn’t difficult to do. I also got my supplies from Drip Depot. I have grow bags and in ground and it works so well. The bags dry out very easily and they get watered two time a day for about 7 minutes, anymore then the bags drain the water away. (I do have straw covering the soil in the bags.) In ground plants I do longer and I have straw over the irrigation and it keeps the soil moist and cool.

    what's the minimum, &/or recommended, size grow bag you would suggest for growing the little lemon drop watermelons? What size grow bag for a 'regular' watermelon--the typical 8-10 pound type? Thanks in advance.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener 28 хвилин тому

      I can't say it's any better than the original Big Beef. In fact, this is the least productive Big Beef tomato plant I've ever seen. Maybe I just got a weaker plant - it happens sometimes, if you grow 10 plants, they'll all vary some and you'll get a couple runts. So, either I got the runt of the litter, or Big Beef Plus isn't quite as productive as Big Beef. That's the problem when you only grow one plant like I do. It makes it harder to compare things like this. What I *can* tell you is I just ate the Big Beef Plus tomato side by side with Carmello in a salad, and I have to say Carmello tasted significantly better. I am loving Carmello so much, it's making me question whether I should discontinue Big Beef for it. It's just out of this world.

      @@TheMillennialGardener I only planted 1 also. Mine are all smaller than original Big Beef, and it’s not as productive. Disease resistance is pretty good so far.

    Great content about dragonflies also my favorite insect. Growing up in ND my mother taught us kids how to catch dragonflies. We lived in a flat farming region yet mosquitoes were abundant. Sadly, it was also the time DDT was heavily being used to kill them, and as we learned DDT is indiscriminate and kills all insects while also being toxic to humans.

    My two best growing here in southeast Missouri which is very hot and very humid is the Burpee Super Sauce it's like a giant Roma and the Early Girl tomato which is a bit smaller than the beefsteak variety, between the two I get a lot of sauce, juice and diced tomatoes to can up. I keep the bottom branches trimmed away for air flow as well as some of the non-producing branches, it seems to help the plant. Yummy tomatoes. I may give your plum tomato a try next year. Thanks for the info.

    I've grown full size tomatoes in 3-5 hours of sunlight, and people are often shocked. It does take a little longer to set fruit, but they aren't any smaller, and the plants stay healthy all season. I'm glad you are showing the world this! It's frustrating, I feel the 8-12 hours of direct sunlight is almost a myth, and a harmful one at that.
